TheHaswellLappy (model Lenovo G50-70) is a laptop manufactured by Lenovo in 2014. It was AveryEclipse’s main PC between 2018 and 2021, and since then a secondary/testing PC.

Naming

At some point since late 2025 (?), the computer began to be referred to as TheHaswellLappy, inspired from a computer naming scheme previously used by KitSixtyFour for their computers in 2024-2026, where The is an obligatory prefix, Haswell the generation of the CPU used (Intel Core i5-4210U), and Lappy being a common nickname for the word laptop.

The decision to use TheHaswellLappy name was primarily made to avoid confusion with Kit’s Dell Latitude 3380, formerly named Thei5Lappy, although on the other hand Avery’s first PC and Kit’s eMachines ET1810-03 are both known to share the name TheCeleryPC, albeit retroactively in the former’s case.

History

As a main PC

TheHaswellLappy had began to be used as Avery’s main PC since 27 June 2018. The PC itself was the most powerful Avery had yet, allowing them to raise video quality from 720p to 1080p and eventually from 30fps to 60fps. Avery’s entry to streaming was also possible thanks to the laptop.

A blog post (since lost media) was posted on the then Medium-based Solarix Blog about how powerful the laptop was.

In early October 2018, Windows 10 Pro was reinstalled on the laptop for the first time, due to the first install that came with the laptop the moment Avery got it randomly breaking with a BSOD followed by it no longer booting at all, having tried to fix it for hours to no avail.

Unlike the first install which was on Legacy Mode/MBR, this new install was done on UEFI/GPT instead. The decision was made to skip Windows 10 1809 due to concerns thanks to the file deletion bug.

Around mid March 2019, the 128GB Kingston SSD containing the Windows 10 install stopped working at all, rendering the laptop unusable. Windows 10 Pro was reinstalled this time on a purpose-made separate partition on the 1TB Western Digital HDD, which remained MBR.

After the SSD incident, Avery got really afraid of doing various tasks on the PC, scared that the HDD would die the same way. An upgrade from Windows 10 1803 to 19H1 was made in June 2019, and then to 19H2 in early 2020, an automatic update although Avery had updates paused. The Windows 10 install would never be updated from 19H2, and would be used for over 2 years until August 2021.
In addition to the degraded performance from running Windows 10 on HDD vs SSD, over time the PC started to not reliably handle video editing as much. Avery dropped Vegas Pro and moved back to Camtasia and went back from 60fps back to 30fps. CPU started to reach 80°C temperatures almost every time, sometimes even reaching 90°C. At some point, Avery had to start rendering videos on Camtasia in parts then put them together and render in Windows 10’s video editor, considered to be more lightweight.

In 16 August 2021, the 128GB Kingston SSD became usable again, showing up on the This PC folder the other day. Data previously considered lost media was recovered from the Windows 10 1803 install and the Users folder. After tests being done on the SSD, a new fresh Windows 10 21H1 install was done on the SSD which essentially became the main boot drive again.

Occasional issues continued to exist with the SSD which later fully stopped in September 2021. On the HDD, the Windows 10 19H2 install was finally wiped and replaced with Windows 7, used briefly until Avery finally got a new capable computer in early November 2021, the IdeaPad 3 15ITL6.

As a secondary PC

TheHaswellLappy began to be used as a secondary PC. In December 2021, the Windows 10 install on the SSD was replaced with an Windows 11 one after the former stopped booting, and a video was made about it on the Lynxmic channel.

Several other Windows 11 installs followed until October 2025, when Avery decided to install Windows 10 LTSC 2019 on it instead. In the meantime, the HDD had finally been converted from MBR to GPT around 2023-24.

In early February 2026, the Windows 10 LTSC 2019 install on the 128GB SSD was wiped in place of a Windows 8.1 Pro install, which would then be used for various AstroNT videos such as the ChromeOS Flex, PCtoVM, and most notably, the 8Store video.
